Whilst not one of the old colleges, St Hugh’s can offer accommodation set within fourteen acres of quiet, leafy North Oxford. Located just outside of the city centre, we are only a 15 minute walk from the main attractions of Oxford.

We can offer ensuite bedrooms within the relatively modern Maplethorpe and Rachel Trickett buildings. We can also offer rooms with shared bathroom facilities within our more traditional Main Building. All rooms are provided with bed linen, towels and toiletries, and tea/coffee making facilities. Although these rooms are not to hotel standards they are comfortable, clean and tidy.

History to the present day

Compared to many Oxford Colleges, St Hugh’s is young. It was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great niece of the poet. Using money left to her by her father, a bishop of Lincoln, she named the College after one of his twelfth century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220, and in whose diocese Oxford had been. Elizabeth Wordsworth was a champion of women's education, and her foundation of St Hugh’s enabled poorer women to gain an Oxford education, beginning in a house with just four students.

Now more than a century later, over five hundred undergraduates and graduates attend the College. The first male undergraduates were admitted in 1986.

Dining and drinking

A full English breakfast is included in the price of your room and will be served in the Dining Hall, between 8am -10am during term time and 8am - 9am during vacations.

Grounds and gardens

We are fortunate to have fourteen acres of self-contained grounds, with ample lawns, borders and mature trees, making St Hugh’s one of the loveliest hidden delights of Oxford. There are plenty of benches available so guests can relax and enjoy our quiet and pleasant grounds.

Other facilities

The College can make parking available to guests – please ensure that you request parking on the Additional Information form when you make your booking.

Bedrooms in the Maplethorpe Building have wi-fi network access which can be made available to guests.  Please ensure you mention in the Additional Information section of the booking form if you require access to this service, so we can issue a username and password.

Customer feedback

We guarantee that all our feedback is genuine and can only be submitted by people who have booked through our websites.

Dr Susan Jones, January 2011: College staff were very helpful and friendly. Location was excellent. I would certainly do this again.

Izabella Khazagerova, January 2011: Overall I was very happy with the service at such price and plan to stay at this college again next time. Thank you!

vuillermet, January 2011: Un séjour agréable que nous recommandons à tous; une précision : en week end c'est très calme car il n'y a aucun étudiant

Mathieu Morey, January 2011: It was a very pleasant stay overall: quiet, comfortable and clean.

Mrs J M RUSHGROVE, December 2010: Nice and warm (even though it was -7 outside) and clean. Very quiet and bathroom opposite my room. Basic accom but perfectly adequate.

Sebastian Kreutzer, December 2010: Friendly staff. Unfortunately it was the last day of the term so it was a little bit noisy.

Romualdo Santos, December 2010: A very basic room. It was only one night, but the stay was satisfactory for my objective: a safe, clean and quite place for an overnight when participating in a seminar at the University.

Hilary Bulman, December 2010: Excellent location for stay in Oxford. Can walk or short bus ride to city centre. Ability to park car a great bonus. Simple basic room with walk down corridor to ablutions. Generous breakfast.

Gabrielle Suet Yee, YIU, November 2010: very nice experience! I will come again and introduce to my friends!

Mark Haines, November 2010: Nobody's going to stay at St Hugh's and be overwhelmed. It's cheap, clean accom just a little bit too far out of town to be ideal. However, it's very easy to find ( if you're coming from the north down the M40 ) and there's no false expectations. Really good value for money. Didn't have breakfast.

Graham Peach, November 2010: A treat beyond our expectations given the excellent price. Well received by the friendly porters, a clean and comfortable twin room (we pushed the beds together - very nostalgic!), not being en suite was no real problem (the floor was quiet and we rarely saw other guests or students) and the breakfast was first class in quality and service. We'll be back again!

David Strudwick, November 2010: Very comfortable stay...again! Shame I couldn't extend my booking by one night...but you were fully booked...and I guess I'm not surprised! Anyway...many thanks Dave Strudwick.

Fiona Richards, November 2010: Brilliant stay - the staff were great

maryann gascoigne, October 2010: Found st Hughs and also Jesus on a previous time excellent service and experience.

Elisabeth DONETTI, October 2010: What a fantastic stay ! An unique way to experience the unique atmosphere of a Oxford College. Everything was fine : welcome, site, room, breakfast...we strongly recommend it ! Elisabeth & Nathalie ( Paris, France)

Terry Blacker, October 2010: Very warm welcome with minimum of fuss. Would definitely recommend to stay in a college and the parking is a bonus.

Aaron Lai, September 2010: St. Hugh's is a lovely college within walking distance from the town center. The garden is very picturesque as an English garden.

Martyn Buxton-Hoare, September 2010: Brilliant for the money - and free parking as well in the middle of Oxford is a great bonus. Beds were a bit lumpy though, but even so, a good night's sleep.

Mr Henry Dunstan, September 2010: Room clean. Breakfast truly superb. Thanks

Mr Greg Harris, September 2010: Excellent breakfast and clean room. Thank you

Dave Wright, August 2010: Porters were very helpful

Rebecca Dunne, August 2010: Enjoyable stay. Very quiet and peaceful. Only downside was that the car park was locked about 8pm which meant a lonely walk up the drive, in the dark, when I had to park on the street later in the evening.

Deirdre MacCarthy Morrogh, August 2010: Had to chase up request for parking, but otherwise very pleased with the overall experience.

Ian Willetts, August 2010: Picturesque college, very friendly, very quiet.

Gayle Sutherland, August 2010: very noisy language student group around and about
