Whilst not one of the old colleges, St Hugh’s can offer accommodation set within fourteen acres of quiet, leafy North Oxford. Located just outside of the city centre, we are only a 15 minute walk from the main attractions of Oxford.
We can offer ensuite bedrooms within the relatively modern Maplethorpe and Rachel Trickett buildings. We can also offer rooms with shared bathroom facilities within our more traditional Main Building. All rooms are provided with bed linen, towels and toiletries, and tea/coffee making facilities. Although these rooms are not to hotel standards they are comfortable, clean and tidy.
History to the present day
Compared to many Oxford Colleges, St Hugh’s is young. It was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great niece of the poet. Using money left to her by her father, a bishop of Lincoln, she named the College after one of his twelfth century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220, and in whose diocese Oxford had been. Elizabeth Wordsworth was a champion of women's education, and her foundation of St Hugh’s enabled poorer women to gain an Oxford education, beginning in a house with just four students.
Now more than a century later, over five hundred undergraduates and graduates attend the College. The first male undergraduates were admitted in 1986.
Dining and drinking
A full English breakfast is included in the price of your room and will be served in the Dining Hall, between 8-10am daily.

Grounds and gardens
We are fortunate to have fourteen acres of self-contained grounds, with ample lawns, borders and mature trees, making St Hugh’s one of the loveliest hidden delights of Oxford. There are plenty of benches available so guests can relax and enjoy our quiet and pleasant grounds.

Mrs A Skinner, July 2010: It would have been helpful to have had some tourist information available especially a map otherwise a very pleasant experience and very quiet at night
Pat Mapley, July 2010: My accomodation was a better standard than I expected.
Dr Colin Machin, July 2010: some time the room gets over heated, and the air circulation is poor. (could be just an unusually hot summer...) apart from that, it was very very good.
Thanks.
Lorraine Durcan, July 2010: Excellent value for money, beautiful surroundings, visit too short!
Dr Alison Lane, July 2010: Very friendly and welcoming staff.
The facilities were very clean and tidy, although some (bathrooms, etc...) were a little run-down (although expected for a college and the price).
Chris Tenove, June 2010: Everything worked out very well, including the staff at St Hugh's.
JeYoung Jung, June 2010: I really enjoyed staying your accommodation.
Cheryle Gittens-Bailey, June 2010: Overall this was a great experience.
Thank you
David Strudwick, June 2010: Another very pleasant stay while attending lectures and tutorials...many thanks.
Professor Barbara English, June 2010: A wonderful experience, very friendly and helpful staff, the gardens a joy in the summer weather, quiet, well placed for buses, can't recommend too highly and would certainly go again.

Lucy Valerie Graham, June 2010: I loved staying at St hughs it was so quiet and peaceful. Room was very clean and made me feel studious! Also great to have internet access.

John Garrison, June 2010: The staff was excellent. Cleaning staff were very helpful, patient, and always very friendly. The fellow who appears to run the breakfast program in the dining hall was especially helpful and welcoming.
SADAF AHMED, June 2010: I really enjoyed my stay, the service was great, everyone at the lodge was very helpful including the gentleman at breakfast who approached me and showed me the breakfast menu.
Dr Margaret Connolly, May 2010: Overall experience was better than I'd been led to expect from the booking, e.g. St Hugh's had told me in advance that weekend breakfast was a brunch served from 10.30; this did not fit well with my conference and I was expecting to miss breakfast each day. When I arrived they told me that they now served a full breakfast from 8 am - the provision was sumptuous! I was very pleased with this experience and would use the booking service again in the future.
Lieve Meerschman, May 2010: Great way to visit Oxford !
David Sampson, May 2010: This is the first time I've stayed at St Hugh's. I'm a part time graduate student and need periodic accommodation. I stay at colleges when I can. It was overall, an excellent experience. Much better than some of the hotels in the area. It's a great value for the money and is close to all the science departments. The bus stops are very convenient too. The room was clean. The only drawback the shared showers and toilets, since none of the rooms are en-suite. If you can live with that, it's a great value and location.
Anthony Bays, May 2010: Basic but to a high standard.
